Ben Nevis Info

Situated near the town of Fort William in the north west Highlands is Ben Nevis, Scotland’s tallest peak. Millions of years ago Ben Nevis one was once an active volcano which exploded and collapsed inwards on itself.

There are two main walking routes up Ben Nevis. The most popular is the Mountain Track (also known as the Tourist or Pony Track), but the Carn Mor Dearg Arête route is also an option for experienced hikers.

The mountain track begins on the east side of Glen Nevis not far from Fort William town centre at the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre car park. The route begins with a steep ascent to the halfway lochan', or Lochan Meall an t-Suidhe. Once at the summit you will find a cairn which marks the highest point. Enjoy views of peaks including Torridon Hills and Ben Lomond

If you opt for the more challenging Carn Mor Dearg Arête route you will incorporate a ridge climb, hence the need for hikers to be experienced and physically fit. Start from either the North Face car park at Torlundy, or follow the Mountain Track to the halfway lochan, then take the left fork whilst the right fork continues along the Mountain Track. You’ll pass the CIC Hut, a private shelter for mountaineers.

Ben Nevis is one of three British peaks climbed as part of the National Three Peaks Challenge.
